Var and inland Provence: another French Riviera
When staying on the French Riviera, it would be a shame to only stay on the Mediterranean coast.
A few dozen kilometers from the coast begins another region: inland Provence.
The landscapes are changing rapidly.
Buildings and beaches give way to hilltop villages, olive groves, vineyards, forests and Provençal markets.
The villages
The inland Var region has a remarkable collection of villages.
Among the villages I recommend discovering:
Tourtour, perched at 635 meters and classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France;
Aups, at the gates of the Verdon;
Villecroze, famous in particular for its troglodytic caves;
Cotignac, located at the foot of tufa cliffs;
Salernes, known for its ceramic tradition.
Regional tourism rightly presents the Haut-Var as a territory of picturesque villages and heritage.
An agricultural Provence
Inland Provence is also a land of production.
Vines, olive trees, cereals, honey, truffles and local produce all contribute to its identity.
The market often becomes an excellent way to discover this tangible and vibrant Provence.
A Provence of nature
The landscapes also allow for numerous walks and hikes.
The Haut-Var and the Verdon offer a particularly interesting contrast with the coast.
It's a region where you can take the time to drive, stop in a village, have lunch in a square and leave without a very busy schedule.
