Vallauris-Golfe-Juan. Art, sea and history

Introduction

Vallauris, Picasso's Man with a Sheep

Just a few minutes from Antibes and Cannes, Vallauris-Golfe-Juan is the municipality where is located Jasmins Studio.

It brings together two complementary faces: Vallauris, a city of art and ceramics, and Golfe-Juan, a seaside resort open to the Mediterranean.

It is also a city deeply marked by two figures who contributed to its renown: Pablo Picasso and Napoleon Bonaparte.

And you don't need to take your car to begin your exploration: the National Museum Picasso "War and Peace" is located just 950 meters from Jasmins Studio, that's about a 13-minute walk.

Vallauris, the city of ceramics

The pottery tradition of Vallauris is ancient.

From the 16th century onwards, families from around Genoa participated in the repopulation of the village and the development of local production.

At the end of the 19th century, the arrival of the railway greatly boosted the activity.
The workshops developed and Vallauris gradually became an important center for ceramic production.

Then comes Picasso.

Visit Vallauris

In 1947, Picasso discovered ceramics in Vallauris and worked with the Madoura workshop of Suzanne and Georges Ramié.

His presence attracts other artists and helps to make Vallauris a place where painters, sculptors, architects, craftsmen and ceramists meet.

Even today, this story is very present in the city.

Golfe-Juan, the sea and Napoleon

A few kilometers from the centre of Vallauris lies Golfe-Juan, its seafront.

The ports, beaches and water sports offer a completely different side of the town.

The town has more than 3.5 kilometers of beaches and offers sea excursions to the Lérins Islands.

But Golfe-Juan is also a major historical site: Napoleon landed there on March 1, 1815, at the beginning of his return to Paris.
