The Cians and Daluis Gorges: the Colorado of Nice

At only 1 hour 41 minutes and 103 km of Jasmins Studio, An amazing discovery awaits you in the French Riviera Alps.

Imagine red cliffs, wild valleys, and landscapes that seem to belong to another planet.
Welcome to what is sometimes called the Nice Colorado.

Les Gorges de Daluis

The Cians and Daluis gorges are two parallel gorges carved into the red schists by the Var and the Cians.

The contrast is spectacular: in the Cians gorges, the white limestone cliffs of the lower part give way abruptly, at the level of Pra d'Astier, to a deep wine-red.
In the Daluis gorges, this geological wealth led to the creation, in 2012, of the First Regional Nature Reserve of the Alpes-Maritimes, which extends over more than 1,000 hectares across the municipalities of Guillaumes and Daluis.

An exceptional geological landscape

The red color of the gorges comes from the pelites, sedimentary rocks rich in iron.
Erosion has gradually sculpted these walls and created extremely rugged landscapes.

The Daluis Gorge reserve has more than 70 species of minerals, some of which were discovered here for the first time.
This wealth is not limited to geology.

The flora and fauna are a mix of alpine and Mediterranean species, and the reserve is even home to endemic species, such as the Marbled pelite, a snail whose pinkish shell is reminiscent of the color of the rocks.

The Daluis Gorge: a spectacular road

Gorges de Daluis, la départementale à 17 tunnels

In the Daluis gorges, the road had been laid out at the beginning of the 20th century to allow the passage of a tramway.

Today, it is one of the most beautiful road routes in the Alpes-Maritimes.
It includes, in particular 17 tunnels, the famous Bride's Bridge and several breathtaking viewpoints at the edge of the cliffs.

It's a route where you need to take your time.
Stop regularly.
The spectacle is as much in the road itself as in the landscapes it crosses.

The Bride's Bridge

THE Bride's Bridge is one of the iconic places in the Daluis gorges.

In particular, it offers a perspective on the Amen waterfall.

It is one of the steps in the discovery loop that I recommend.

Guillaumes: a stopover between the two gorges

Guillaumes, proche de Valberg et à 16 km d'Entrevaux

The small town of Guillaumes allows the exploration to continue.

The landscape changes again: the heavily eroded black marls create very rugged reliefs.

This is an interesting step before moving on to Valberg.

Valberg: extending the discovery

The Cians gorges road is also one of the main access routes to the Valberg resort.

I propose a complete loop: Daluis → Bridal Bridge → Guillaumes → Valberg.

This formula allows you to transform the discovery of the gorges into a real day trip.

Valberg, a very popular ski resort

The gorges on foot

Valberg, the planetary trail

The gorges cannot only be discovered from the road.
Numerous marked trails allow you to explore these landscapes more deeply.

From Valberg, I particularly recommend:

  • THE planetary path ;
  • THE historical trail, which tells the story of the construction of Valberg and the work of man in the Cians.

Mountain guides and Reserve agents also offer outings dedicated to geology and biodiversity: geological hikes, bird watching and night outings in particular.

For thrill-seekers

Canyoning
The unique geology of the gorges creates routes that are very different from those usually encountered.
In the Cians gorges, the routes include waterfalls, pools and rappelling descents.

I will mention in particular:

  • Raton's stream;
  • the Challandre valley;
  • the Cianavelle stream.

These routes are technical: they are intended for supervised and properly equipped individuals..

Bicycles and Mountain Bikes
Six marked routes are available in the area.
Valberg also has a bike park with several levels of difficulty.

An excursion that offers a complete change from the French Riviera

This is probably what makes this destination particularly interesting for your guests.

Less than two hours from Jasmins Studio, you pass:

  • from the Mediterranean to the French Riviera Alps,
  • from the blue of the sea to the red of the pelites,
  • from beaches to cliffs.

The change of scenery is total.

My advice to my guests

Don't just try to do the gorges by car.

I recommend you set aside a day: Jasmins Studio → Daluis → Bridal Bridge → Guillaumes → Valberg → return.

Take your time on the roads, stop at viewpoints and, if you wish, choose a short hike.
Canyoning, mountain biking or hiking enthusiasts will naturally be able to devote much more time to the area.
